Sunblock. Your Most Important Cosmetic

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Wendy Owen Your Most Important Cosmetic? Sunblock by a mile! Are you a skin care junkie? Is your bathroom closet overflowing with bottles and jars? Does the content of these bottles and jars actually do anything to improve your skin? My guess is “sometimes”. We all get seduced by promises of younger looking skin or banish wrinkles overnight. But the sad fact is a lot of the pretty looking products out there do not do what they promise and the wrinkles, acne, broken veins or whatever ails you is still there the next morning. There is one cosmetic that stands head and shoulders above the rest - Sunblock. Sunblock is the best preventative of aging skin you can buy in a bottle. It won’t make you look younger in a few applications, you need to use it regularly - like every day - but over time it will make a tremendous difference to the appearance of your skin. Sunblock can be found as lotion, gel, roll on, or spray. If you’re on a tight budget you can usually buy a bottle for just a few dollars from a supermarket or drugstore. Test it on an inconspicuous part of you first in case you have an allergy to it! This is more important for the cheaper brands. Use sunblock even if its cloudy outside. Ultraviolet (UV) rays can penetrate clouds by up to 80%, yes even if its raining. If you’re driving, UV rays can penetrate glass, they can also be reflected off glass or water. And don’t just use sunblock on your face. Put it on your hands, feet, arms or whatever bits of you that are not covered up. This is not just for appearances, sunblock can prevent potentially fatal skin cancers and melanomas from developing. Even if you have never used sunblock and you’ve already developed premature aging, its not too late! Regular use of sunblock and staying out of the sun can actually reverse some of the damage. Make sure you use a sunblock which has a sun protection factor (SPF) of over 15 and apply it fairly generously for best results. Its also best to apply at least 20 minutes before venturing out. Healing Herbs for Rashes and Skin Irritations

Monday, May 26th, 2008

By Mary Welty There have been literally hundreds of enquiries this month for herbs to cure skin rashes and irritations, so I thought Id take a moment to share some of my favorite skin treatments. First, let me remind you that the best overall skin care product you can use is olive oil. Whether you suffer from dry or itchy skin, or just wish to improve the appearance and texture of your skin, you would be hard pressed to do better than pure, extra virgin olive oil. This can be applied straight from the bottle, and can be used on any part of the skin including the face. The curative properties of Olive Oil, both internal and external are nothing short of miraculous and I would like to share with you a recent experience that serves as a reminder to me how some of the most common elements surrounding us often remain overlooked. My neighbor and I happen to share the same birthday. She is a widow whose children and grandchildren often come to visit. As our birthdays approached, I made her up a bottle of my favorite after-bath oil (made primarily with olive oil) as a gift. Unfortunately for my neighbor, I ran into her daughter first, who had suffered a severe exposure to Poison Ivy. In all honestly, it was the worst case of poison ivy I had ever seen. Her legs were almost completely covered in angry, purple splotches. In a number of areas, the rash was crusting and developing a greenish tinge. The itching was so intense that even after two weeks she was still on sleep medication as well as prescription strength antihistamines and ointments. I gave the oil to her and sincerely hoped it would help to alleviate her suffering. Im pleased to report that five days later, my neighbor called, overjoyed. Not only had the oil relieved the itching, but also the crusty, green scabs were gone and the huge purple blotches had begun to fade. The oil I mentioned is extremely simple to prepare and is an excellent curative for virtually any skin irritation including eczema and psoriasis. After-Bath Oil:Please remember that while a lesser grade of olive oil can be used for everyday purposes, if you are attempting to treat a serious skin condition, the extra virgin is made from the first press of the olive and retains the most important curative properties that you are searching for. 3 parts extra virgin olive oil 1 part sweet almond oil 1 part apricot kernel oil Blend the oils together, and if desired, add several drops of your favorite essential oil for fragrance. This can be applied to the skin at any time. For all-over skin conditioning, apply the oil immediately after your bath or shower, then pat dry. A special note for women who shave their legs: This oil treatment will completely eliminate any itching or dry flaking skin after shaving. It is simply the best after-bath oil you will ever try. Please check back next week when we will be discussing herbal treatments for many common irritants such as bee stings, nettles, burns and more. Do You Have a Personal Assistant in Your Kitchen?

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

By B Lynch Have you ever dreamed of having a personal assistant in your kitchen? Oh I have, many times! As I dreamed of things this personal assistant would do for me, I developed some time savings tips that will make your time in the kitchen less stressful. One of the most efficient time savers is planning your meals by the week, for two weeks or even a month at a time. After you plan your meals, compile a grocery list. By each item on your grocery list, list the dish which you will be using that ingredient. This will help you once you return home from your grocery shopping. Do your grocery shopping on a day and time there are fewer people at the grocery store. This will allow less stress in fighting the crowds and will help you think clearly as you are making your food selections. Once you get home, take time putting away your groceries. Clean and chop your vegetables such as herbs, onions, peppers, celery. Once cleaned and chopped, pre measure your vegetables, place in a storage bag labeled with the recipe it goes in. Keep one shelf in your refrigerator for ingredients for your meals. Let your family know about this shelf so they will not eat your ingredients. When you are browning your ground beef, brown all the beef you are going to use the rest of the week. Put cooled browned beef in plastic bags or containers, and label them with the recipe name. This will cut down on your prep time for the rest of the week. There is no use in browning beef several times in a week. When thinking about your personal assistant, think about your appliances that can help you. Your slow cooker will become your best friend. In the morning, you can assemble your vegetables and meat in your slow cooker in less than 10 minutes. Your meal will be done when you return home in the evening. A slow cooker is a wonderful investment! Always keep pre packaged salad on hand to have a quick and easy side dish. Are You Buying African Hoodia?

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Patsy Hamilton Many people have heard about African hoodia. News reporters have traveled to Africa to sample the plant. Pharmaceutical companies are currently working on a prescription medication which makes use of the South African hoodia gordonii plant. Many health supplement companies are marketing products which claim to contain African hoodia for use by dieters as natural appetite suppressants. While most of these companies are undoubtedly delivering reliable and high quality products, there have been reports which state that some of these products do not contain South African hoodia gordonii, at all. So, how can the consumer be sure that what he or she is buying is genuine? Wild growth of South African hoodia gordonii is rare and protected from exportation by legislation. In order to legally export African hoodia gordonii, a manufacturer must have a CITES license. Legally exported African hoodia is grown on farms or plantations. A reputable supplement company should be willing to make their licenses available for inspection by consumers. In order to support claims that they are selling genuine South African hoodia gordonii, some companies display their CITES licenses and the chemical evaluations of their products. The wise consumer will read these reports carefully. Some companies appear to have documents that, upon close inspection, are questionable. South African hoodia gordonii is a succulent that grows in clumps of upright stems. Some reporters have called it an ugly plant. Beauty is, however, in the eye of the beholder. After about five years the South African hoodia gordonii produces pale purple flowers. According to Phytopharm, a British pharmaceutical company holding the patent on the active molecule in African hoodia, it is around this same time that the plant reaches maturity and can be harvested. Phytopharm has invested millions of dollars researching the African hoodia plants potential as an appetite suppressant. Some critics of the health supplement industry are concerned that the active molecule may not be present in large enough quantities to have an effect on a persons appetite. Supporters recount the South African hoodia plants historical use by natives. They were not able to isolate an active molecule. They reportedly ate the stems of the African hoodia gordonii in its natural form. Dieters who have tried the appetite suppressants currently on the market report mixed reviews; as with most health supplements, African hoodia works for some people and not for others. No one is claiming that healthy diet and a reasonable exercise program are not important for weight loss. While South African hoodia gordonii may help to curb a persons appetite, it will not magically melt the fat off of a persons body. Consumers interested in trying African hoodia should buy from a reputable company that sells other health supplements, displays a CITES certification and/or chemical analysis, and offers a reasonable money-back guarantee if the product fails to produced desired results. Two products which meet all of these criteria and have received positive reviews by dieters are Hoodia XR and Hoodia Gordonii Plus. Hoodia XR is a 1000mg time-released capsule which contains 100% pure South African hoodia gordonii. Hoodia Gordonii Plus contains a mixture of African hoodia and other natural appetite suppressants. Fall Blooming Wildflower - Small White Aster

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By Paul Wonning Aster vimineus Family - Asteraceae - Aster This wild, fall blooming wildflower is so covered with small, pure white blossoms that it seems to explode with color. It usually is found in fairly large colonies in fields and meadows bordering woodlands. From a distance the plants almost seem like an intense white cloud of color, and when blooming in conjunction with goldenrod the effect can be quite breathtaking in the autumn sun. The freshly opening flowers can have a slight bluish hue, and look especially striking in the early morning or late afternoon autumn sun. The range of the Small White Aster runs from Maine in the United States, Ontario in Canada, and west to Michigan. Then south to North Carolina, Indiana and Missouri. It is a perennial wildflower, blooming during September through mid October. Since there are more than 150 species of wild asters in North America, identification can be somewhat difficult sometimes. On this in, the flowers will be clustered on one side of the purplish tinged stem. The flowers are approximately one-half inch in diameter. The plants will range from two to five feet in height and may arch back towards the ground. For those wishing to incorporate wildflowers in the perennial garden, this one may be a bit weedy looking. But in the right spot, it can add a bit of fall color to the normally bland perennial garden. The Small White Asters mass of tiny white blossoms are sure to please the eye, especially in combination with other fall blooming wildflowers.
